Manchester United’s position on Ruben Amorim’s future was already a subject of discussion before the club’s disastrous defeat to Grimsby Town.
On Wednesday night, the League Two side pulled off one of the Carabao Cup’s biggest upsets, sending the Premier League giants crashing out in the second round.

Inside a lively Blundell Park, Grimsby stormed into half-time 2-0 ahead through goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren.
At the restart, Amorim turned to his heavyweights, introducing Matthijs de Ligt, Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo in a bid to turn the tide.
Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee were also brought on as United piled on the pressure in search of a lifeline.
Mbeumo finally broke through in the 75th minute with his first goal for the club, before Harry Maguire rose highest to head home from a corner in the 88th minute, dragging United level at 2-2.
The match was ultimately decided on penalties, where a marathon shootout ended with Mbeumo missing his second spot-kick, handing Grimsby a 12-11 triumph and a place in the third round.
The result leaves Amorim winless in his first three competitive games of the 2025/26 campaign, following defeat to Arsenal and a draw with Fulham in the league.
With United showing little sign of progress, serious questions are now being raised about Amorim’s future in the dugout.
Man United decision on Ruben Amorim
Back in May, ahead of United’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, reports suggested Ruben Amorim’s position was secure.
According to The Times, the club planned to back him regardless of the result, insisting his job was “under no threat at all” unless he chose to walk away.
But after a humiliating start to the 2025/26 season, that stance may be tested, with pressure mounting ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Burnley at Old Trafford.
Amorim has failed to deliver a win in Manchester United’s opening three games of the season, despite bolstering his attack with big-money signings Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, all of whom featured against Grimsby.
Now, with pressure mounting, Saturday’s Premier League clash against newly promoted Burnley at Old Trafford could prove decisive, especially after Amorim admitted in the aftermath of the cup exit that his players may no longer be playing for him.
He said via Sky Sports:
"In the end, it doesn't matter if we recover or not, it's the signs the team gave during the game, the beginning of the game.
"I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch.
"The best players lose because one team can win against any group of players, and I think the team and the players spoke really loud today, so that's it. We lost, the best team won."

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Amorim has wasted no time in setting firm standards to turn United’s fortunes around.
One of his first directives was to ban overly complex instructions from his coaching staff, insisting that simplicity should come before the delivery of any tactical information.
