Wontumi Radio’s Akyenkwa Nana Granted a GH¢100k Bail: "Freedom at Last"

A political show host on Kumasi-based Wontumi TV, Akyenkwa Nana Kofi Asare, has been granted bail by the Circuit Court 9 in the amount of GH¢100,000 with two sureties.
According to the court ruling delivered by Justice Samuel Acquah, the sureties should be public servants, with one earning not less than GH¢5,000 a month.

This development comes after Akyenkwa Nana's bail application was initially denied on August 14, 2025, and was remanded to police custody for one week.
He later appeared in court on Monday, August 25, 2025, but was again denied bail.
Why Akyenkwa Nana was arrested
The controversial TV presenter was arrested for making spurious allegations against President John Dramani Mahama in the wake of the recent national tragic where eight prominet Ghanaians lost their lives.
Following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, Akyenkwaa Nana alleged on live TV that President John Mahama was responsible for the accident.
He subsequently urged the families of the eight deceased Ghanaians to hold the President solely accountable for the loss of their loved ones.
These claims by the Wontumi TV presenter sparked public outrage, with critics describing them as reckless and insensitive to grieving families.
Consequently, the national security stormed his residence at Ejisu on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, to arrest him for investigations into his allegations.
Akyenkwa Nana's first bail application denied
Following the initial denial of his bail application, Akyenkwa Nana's lawyer, Enoch Anhwere Afoakwah, expressed disappointment with the court, citing sections 96 (5) and 96 (6) of the constitution, which suggest that bail should be granted if the accused has a fixed place of abode and sufficient sureties.
The lawyer further argued that his client met these conditions, with Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and owner of the Wontumi Radio, and another journalist willing to stand as sureties.
After spending more than two weeks in police custody, the court finally granted Akyenkwa Nana bail on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, requiring him to provide two sureties.

Akyenkwa Nana's lawyer speaks after securing bail
Addressing the media after securing bail for his client, lawyer Afoakwah expressed gratitude to the court for restoring Akyenkwa Nana's liberty.
"We are grateful that his liberty has finally been restored by the court of the republic, and we humbly pray, in as much as we are in court, we are all asking that due process be continued and the wheel of justice, we know, grinds and grinds, slowly, but at the end of the day fair justice is met." he said.
He further stated that his client pleaded not guilty to the one count offence that has been profered against him and he is ready to stand trial if the prosecution was minded to proceed with the case.
"He has pleaded not guilty to the one count offence that he has been charged with and is ready to appear to stand trial if the prosecution is minded to proceed on the charge and sets of facts as has been filed at the registry of the court," he further stated.
"I have always maintained that per article 19 (2c) of the 1992 Constitution, a person arrested, restricted, or detained is presumed to he innocent until proven guilty," he concluded.

Kevin Taylor teases Akyenkwa Nana
Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh reported that Kevin Taylor ridiculed media personality Akyenkwaa Nana over his legal woes.
In a video, the social media commentator claimed that the Wontumi TV presenter’s troubles could worsen as he remained in police custody.
Kevin Taylor also questioned the lack of support Akyenkwaa Nana Kofi Asare received from NPP sympathisers.
