Ghanaian Man Sues a Doctor and a Private Health Facility for GH¢2M Over Alleged Medical Negligence

A Ghanaian man identified as Clement Frimpong has filed a lawsuit in the High Court against Dr Clement Oppong, an employee of the Ashaiman Municipal Hospital, and his private health facility, Graceyard Hospital, for alleged medical negligence.

In the suit filed on Monday, August 25, 2025, the plaintiff alleged that Dr Oppong and Graceyard Hospital breached their duty of care, leading to the untimely death of his pregnant wife.

According to the statement of claims, Clement Frimpong stated that his wife visited the Ashaiman Municipal Hospital under the care of Dr Oppong for routine antenatal care.

However, Dr Oppong directed them to his health facility, Graceyard Hospital, for better medical care.

Upon arriving at Graceyard Hospital, Mr Frimpong said his wife was admitted on November 7, 2024, and underwent a Caesarean section on November 8, 2024.

While on admission at the hospital, the plaintiff said his wife developed complications, including anaemia, and was subjected to repeated blood transfusions over four days without showing significant improvement.

This, Mr Frimpong claimed, led to the demise of his wife, thereby accusing Dr Oppong, the Ashaiman Municipal Hospital, and Graceyard Hospital of medical negligence.

Frimpong demands GH¢2m damages against Dr Oppong

A referral from Graceyard Hospital reportedly showed that the plaintiff's wife was diagnosed with severe pre-eclampsia, acute kidney injury, and anaemia.

Owing to this, the plaintiff is demanding GH¢1.5 million in general and special damages for wrongful death, loss of support, and emotional distress.

He is also seeking an additional GH¢500,000 for the welfare of the deceased’s infant child and her two young siblings.

The plaintiff is further requesting an order to revoke Dr Oppong’s medical licence, citing gross negligence and professional misconduct.

Additionally, the plaintiff is calling for the closure of Graceyard Hospital and the revocation of its operational licence for allegedly failing to uphold basic patient care standards and regulatory ethical requirements.

The plaintiff is also seeking costs, including legal fees, and any other relief the court deems appropriate in the interest of justice, public safety, and accountability within the medical profession.

Ridge Hospital nurse sues Ralph St Williams

In a related development, YEN.com.gh reported that Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, a nurse at Ridge Hospital, who was allegedly assaulted, filed a GH¢7 million civil suit against Ralph St. Williams.

According to a Writ of Summons filed at the High Court in Accra on August 20, 2025, Rejoice demanded GH¢5 million in damages for battery and an additional GH¢2 million for defamation.

The suit alleged that Ralph St Williams physically attacked her, leaving her with a dislocated shoulder and hand injuries that hindered her ability to perform her duties as a nurse.
