Wontumi TV presenter Akyenkwaa Nana Kofi Asare has been arrested by suspected national security operatives in Ejisu, just days after making controversial on-air comments alleging that former President John Mahama was connected to the recent Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash.

Wontumi TV presenter arrested over Mahama claims
The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, when a military Z-9 helicopter crashed at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region.
Unfortunately, eight people lost their lives, including Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Lumina Muniru, senior military officers, and other government officials.

In the wake of the tragedy, Nana Kofi Asare's claim sparked outrage, with critics describing the statement as reckless and deeply insensitive to grieving families.
In making his first court appearance on August 14, 2025, the Wontumi TV presenter was captured shouting that he was brave and a hero.
According to Joy Online, the station has issued an unreserved apology to President Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the Ghanaian public amid mounting public pressure.
The station clarified that the presenterโs comments did not reflect its editorial position and assured viewers of its commitment to responsible journalism.
Burial of the eight helicopter crash victims
Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the burial of the victims on Friday, August 15, 2025.
The state funeral is expected to draw high-profile dignitaries, military officials, and bereaved families, as Ghanaians come together to honour the lives lost in the line of duty.

Widow of late military official feeds baby
YEN.com.gh also previously reported that the wife of the late Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala tenderly fed their two-month-old baby during a solemn candlelight vigil held in memory of the three crew members who perished in the recent military helicopter crash.
Anala was among the eight victims who tragically lost their lives when a Ghana Armed Forces helicopter went down at Adansi Akrofuom. The touching scene moved many attendees, with mourners offering prayers for strength and comfort for her and loved ones left behind.
